Development Art
development is an editorial process where some
fundamental questions have to be asked while reviewing
the art program. Here are some examples of the
types of basic, yet often overlooked, questions
I ask during development:
- Is this figure an effective
teaching device?
- Does this figure give enough
or too much information?
- Does this figure coordinate
with the text?
- Does this figure aid in
the understanding of the concept?
Effective art development is
best conducted by an individual with a deep knowledge
of science pedagogy. ScEYEnce Studios has the
unique ability to ask questions from the standpoint
of a student, with an understanding of how to
teach with pictures. I developed my analytical
method during my tenure at J/B Woolsey Associates
and many of the books that I developed during
that time remain market leaders.
We offer three different levels
of development services:
Level 1 Development:
Questions are posed to the author/DE on first-pass
artwork. Checking for and enforcing pedagogically
consistent use of icons and color.
Level
2 Development:
A review of the art manuscript prior to
beginning the first draft artwork. Creating concept
sketches (as needed) that are sent to the author/developmental
editor for review. Checking for and enforcing
pedagogically consistent use of icons and color.
Level
3 Development: Development meeting(s)
with the author/developmental editor is scheduled
where sketches are created and concepts are discussed
in a dynamic and creative atmosphere. Checking
for and enforcing pedegogically consistent use
of icons and color. All author's alterations charges
are waived if I am contracted to provide this
level of development.
